Most Dallas-Fort Worth dealers don't have a lead problem. They have a follow-through problem. The lead comes in, an auto-reply goes out, and then nothing happens until someone remembers. Sales automation fixes that only if the handoff to a person is built in.
What the 2026 research says about AI at dealerships
Pied Piper's 2026 Internet Lead Effectiveness study mystery shopped 3,290 franchise dealerships and scored how each one answered a website inquiry. The average score hit 71 out of 100, up from 65 the year before, and the study credited automation and AI for much of the gain. Read the coverage.
- Dealers answered by text 54% of the time, up from 38%
- 75% of shoppers got a phone call, up from 66%
- 62% of dealers used a call plus an email or text, up from 49%
The warning came in the same report. When an inquiry needed a person, scores were 9 points lower and shoppers were twice as likely to get no personal response at all. Pied Piper's analysts named the handoff, between systems and from AI to staff, as the biggest risk.
A sales automation process that holds up
- Reply in under a minute by text and email, confirming the vehicle is still available
- Answer from your inventory: miles, features, history report and photos
- Ask the two questions your desk needs: is there a trade-in, and when do they want to buy
- Offer two test drive times, confirm one and send a reminder the day before
- Hand off anything about price, payments or credit to a named person, with the whole conversation attached
- Follow up on a schedule with shoppers who go quiet, and stop the moment they reply or opt out
What to automate and what to keep
Give the AI sales agent the work that is the same every time:
- The first reply
- Availability and vehicle details
- Trade-in questions
- Setting and confirming appointments
- Follow-ups
Keep the work that takes judgment with your people:
- Price negotiation
- Monthly payments and rates
- Credit approvals
- Unhappy customers
Why the sales CRM matters more than the bot
A handoff works when the person picking it up can see everything that was already said. Jason comes with his own sales CRM: every text and email in one thread, a list of shoppers who are ready for your team, and a calendar of booked test drives. When a shopper asks about payments, Jason stops, flags it and passes the full chat to your team, so nobody starts the conversation over.
The Texas weekend rule
Texas dealers can't sell on both Saturday and Sunday of the same weekend (Transportation Code 728.002). Leads still arrive on the day you close. Jason can answer them and book visits for a day you are open, under whatever rules you set for that day. Our Houston guide covers the rule and the penalties.
Test the handoff yourself
Try the demo: Jason will text you like a shopper. Ask him for a monthly payment and watch what he does with it. If you like what you see, sign up. Plans start at $399 a month for 75 new leads, with no setup fee and no contract.
