A used car shopper in Los Angeles can reach a dozen lots without leaving the couch. The store that answers first with a straight price usually gets the visit. Since October 1, 2026, a straight price is not just good selling in California. It is the rule.
What changed on October 1
California's CARS Act (SB 766) took effect on October 1, 2026. According to CBT News, an ad for a specific vehicle, and a dealer's first written reply to a shopper who asks about one, must show the vehicle's total price. That price includes dealer add-ons and price adjustments. It leaves out taxes and government fees.
- Buyers of used vehicles priced at $50,000 or less get three days to cancel, as long as they have driven no more than 400 miles
- Any written monthly payment quote has to show the total paid over the full term
- Dealers must keep compliance records, such as ads and purchase documents, for two years
This is a summary, not legal advice. Have your compliance counsel sign off on how your store words its replies.
Why this is a job for an AI sales agent
First replies are where stores get inconsistent. One salesperson texts the price. Another says to come in and talk numbers. A third answers the next morning. An AI sales agent for dealerships says the same approved thing every time, in under a minute.
Jason answers from the inventory details and rules you give him. You can require his first reply about any vehicle to include the total price you advertise. An example, not a real customer:
Hi Daniela, this is Jason with Brightline Motors. The 2020 Camry SE is still available: 52k miles, one owner. The total price is $19,480 plus tax and government fees. Want to see it today at 5 or Saturday at 11?
He never quotes monthly payments or promises credit approval. Those go to your finance team with the full chat attached.
Dealers are getting faster, so the bar is moving
Pied Piper's 2026 Internet Lead Effectiveness study mystery shopped 3,290 franchise dealerships. The average score rose to 71 out of 100, from 65 a year earlier, and dealers answered by text 54% of the time, up from 38%. Read the coverage. Independent lots compete for the same shoppers, so a next-morning reply looks slower than it used to.
A county where most homes speak a second language
In Los Angeles County, 55.2% of residents speak a language other than English at home, according to 2024 Census Bureau survey data on Census Reporter. If many of your shoppers would rather text in Spanish or another language, tell us before you sign up and we'll show you how Jason handles it for your store.
Records without the scramble
Jason comes with his own sales CRM. Every text and email with a shopper sits in one thread, with dates and times. When someone asks what your store told a customer and when, you can look it up in seconds instead of asking around the sales floor.
